FAIRFIELD COUNTY'S HUNGER COALITION

The Fairfield County Hunger Coalition, also known as H3 (Hunger, Health, and Hope), is working to build a healthy, educated community by providing information and resources to those dealing with food insecurity in our community.

H3 has a 2 major goals.  The first goal is educating low-income families and individuals in our community about their ability to eat healthy on the limited funds they receive through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aka food stamps.  Our second goal is to provide education and training opportunities to everyone in the community in regards to hunger and hunger related health issues so that our community can be healthy and strong.

Over 18,000 residents of Fairfield County are food insecure.  Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.  The cost of a meal in Fairfield County is around $2.80 per person, per meal but through the SNAP (food stamp) program, folks only receive around $1.40 per person, per meal.  Even though there is a large discrepancy between the cost of a meal in Fairfield County and the amount of assistance folks receive, we want to educate SNAP recipients and show them that healthy eating is an option.  We also want to teach families that through healthy cooking and eating habits we can lower the risk of hunger related health issues, such as, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
