Fairfield County's Hunger Alliance

H3 (Hunger, Health, and Hope), aka the Fairfield County Hunger Coalition is working to build a healthy, educated community by providing information and resources to those dealing with food insecurity in our community.

H3 has a goal of educating low income families and individuals in our community about their ability to eat healthy on the limited funds they receive through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aka food stamps.

Over 18,000 residents of Fairfield County are food insecure.  Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.  The cost of a meal in Fairfield County is $2.86 per person, per meal but through the SNAP (food stamp) program, folks only receive $1.36 per person, per meal.  Even though there is a large discrepancy between the cost of a meal in Fairfield County and the amount of assistance folks receive, we want to educate SNAP recipients and show them that healthy eating is an option.  We also want to teach families that through healthy cooking and eating habits we can lower the risk of hunger related health issues, such as, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
